My studio neighbour Kyoko Wainai has been working with a small community of weavers in Bhutan for the last 3 years, as part of the Tarayana Rural Crafts initiative. She assists them in transforming textiles into bags and objects for the home. When returning from a trip, she brought back a small bag of samples, and amongst the lot was a collection of lustrous woven ribbonlike strips that attracted my eye. Some pieces were no bigger than 10cm by 2cm, so it took me some time to figure out how to integrate them into my work.

The first piece I made was a quilted postcard for the fundraising campaign of Charter School in Dulwich. I built a log cabin around a small piece of woven cloth, and then hand quilted it. It sparked the idea of making more pieces, each featuring a piece of woven cotton from the bag of samples along with linen, cottons and Japanese silks. Each piece was framed as is or hand quilted into a mini piece of textile art.
