Quilts have long been a vessel for meaning, be it through figurative imagery, written words or the use of traditional patterns conveying their own particular significance. This quilt, which was commissioned as a wedding present, shows that a minimalist and abstract design can also be imbued with meaning.
The clients chose fabrics to represent the couple’s travels across the world: an embossed red Italian silk in the binding stands for the country of their birth and some Liberty of London prints represent their current home. A Persian paisley and a sand coloured linen are reminders of a trip to Jordan and Iran, while a dark denim and an African print recall a trip to the United States and their honeymoon in Namibia. Love is highlighted in the two distinct panels for the bride and groom while friendship is represented in the binding by four small pieces of fabric, each given by one of the four friends who pooled their resources to offer a timeless heirloom to the newlyweds.
In a tongue-in-cheek way, the quilt also has something old (a vintage Liberty print), something new (most of the fabrics), something borrowed (pieces of clothing from friends) and something blue (the denim).
